I have had previous experiences with Kindred Westminster, over the past 10 years and they have not been great.
But recently, a family member was there for a few weeks within the last month and they have made some drastic changes. The staff seemed to be more attentive, the facility had a major uplift since I have last been there and the smell has definitely gotten better.
I appreciated the efforts and the warm smiles we received when we walked in the door to the nurses stations.
Thank you for your efforts and your care.

Thank you to the wonderful staff here. The rehab center was excellent. They were very caring and attentive to one of my family members. Physical therapy here was amazing too! Every visit they showed so much support. I’m very appreciative of the staff here for taking care of my family member.

Honestly worst place ever. My mom has been here twice and this is the longest she has been there. She was transferred from Orange Coast Memorial, and since the first day it's been a nightmare. When she first got there I told them not to give her any narcotics because she wasn't staying awake and they never passed it along to other shifts and gave her morphine anyway. She was severely backed up because of said narcotics and they still didn't listen when I said to not give her any. My mother was sleep for a whole week without anyone being able to talk to her because of them not listening. Then she contracted Covid and they took her to ICU where the staff was even worse. The had proper ppes but acted like they couldn't go in her room to assist her with anything. There were several times where I've had to call up to the hospital because they were not answering her call light and they were incredibly rude when I did. The front desk is just as bad, barely answering the phone and then when I would send my mom stuff for her to have while there they would take forever to call the nurse to come down and get it. Several times they would just have my mom's food sitting at the nurses station so she would have cold food. Even just 20 minutes ago I was on the phone with her and she was yelling for 10 minutes and a nurse never came and I called and then got put on hold for 10 minutes just to get someone there to help her go to the bathroom. This place is ridiculous

This was the first time I have visited this facility, I have been to the Kindred in Brea and let me tell you, it is 100x better! The facility is so much cleaner and does not smell like death is knocking on your room door, pardon my bluntness.
The nurses during the evening were so kind and attentive and accommodating to our family, which made all the difference in the world!

Avoid this place at all cost!

Extremely invasive intake process (will stick a swab in rectum without any warning) - when patient asked why it was done to them, they were told "it's the law" but when a friend came to visit, who is a nurse, they told her "it's our procedure".

Nurses will disregard patients and skip around questions - patient asked what meds they were being given and nurses were hesitant to give out this information. They ended up giving my family member diazepam for absolutely no reason and they were instructed not to give any sedatives to this patient.

Physical Therapists (some of them) are an absolute joke - my family member, the patient, had to wait all day just for the therapist to walk them up a hallway and back, when they were walking 10x that amount before for PT. Also had a therapist tell my family member "you don't need your PICC line". Physical therapists should not be speaking on this topic whatsoever.

You might see the doctor for 2-3 minutes/day at most - my family member rarely talks to Dr. Shivanand Pole.

ICU ward has been EXTREMELY loud for it being 1AM - there was a radio playing music that they would not turn off and they will not let you close your door.

Place is KNOWN for giving patients Candida infection but won't even give Echinocandins or any other antifungal! My family member was told "it will go away on its own" and that's it.

My mother in law (EdD, MEd, MSN, FNP-C, BSN, CCRN, PHN, BA) and my family member's nurse are reporting Kindred Hospital for their disgusting behavior and unwillingness to cooperate with my family member, their patient.

Horrible place. My father was very ill and old (80yr) transfered from Anaheim hospital to there back in Oct. 2023. All the staff ( Doctors, Nurse, etc) in ICU were very poor to help him getting better in health. One of Nurse raise voice (almost yelling) over the my mom’s cellphone ( my mom no speak English) when talks to me. Sadly my father pass away less than a week. After less than two days hospital staff called our family move his body because there is not enough space to keep in the hospital. You will feel it s 100% business , care is not priority .

If there was a negative 100 ? rating thats what I would give. It was a living nightmare that I believe could have resulted in my daughters death had I not been there. It is a LONG story to cover just the first 6 hours there. Thankfully, in conjunction with her physician from Hoag we were able to transport her to Hoag rehab a week later. It took time and 100% of my time at her bedside and monitoring every moment to get her to Hoag safely. Sadly, from my point of view many patients are incapable of advocating for themselves. I would NEVER allow a loved one to be there for any amount of time. Also sad, that Kindred was offered as the best rehap in the area?.
After learning of the plans for UCI and Kindred to open a rehab i hope patients have a better experience and this proves to be a positive development.

I agree with James Ha and some of the others. I will post more later but Please be advised that if you have a loved one and a dr is recommending this place, please DO NOT unless absolutely no other choices exist. And absolutely not if your loved one had a stroke. As the rehab part is limited. They isolate patients or keep them tubed or sleeping and they will run to an invasive medical procedure vs contact with patient. This is not healthy for stroke recovery. My mom is in for something else but I'm glad we weren't here after her stroke in 2018. I gave this place the benefit of the doubt despite my concerns and we are regretting it. They don't follow medical standards due to lack of staffing and terrible ratios but will cite policy when they want to. Communication is terrible by medical staff and 1 CNA per 12-14 bedridden patients is medically and morally unacceptable. Nutrition drops off lunch but staff isn't often available to help set up for patient. They leave to side, but then they will say patient didn't want it (not unusal in hospitable setting including UCI-Health Fountain Valley formerly Fountain Valley Regional Hospital). Not to mention patients are on floors two and three and but almost all elevators are out of order. There is only one functional elevator at this time. All others (for patients, visitors and staff) are down along with some bathrooms and room phones. Again, think 2x before coming here and if your loved one can be treated via home health I would recommend that if feasible and better for their mental health.
And keep in mind, this LOCATION's (this one only as they have others) annual revenue in 2022 as reported to the state of CA was $62,732,078 (primarily Medicare, Medicare Advantage and Medicaid) .

Update 9/7: More extreme awfulness happened after this review and glad to be out of there. Don't believe their little statements we send to admin for review. It's bull. They don't care. Even in the facility they only give lip service and move along. This place is a morgue and should be shut down. If patients make it out, I would credit the patient before crediting any care received at this facility. And having seen proper care (my mom received from another facility in 2018) I still say if you have a stroke surviving loved one that needs longer term care, ABSOLUTELY DO NOT ADMIT THEM HERE.

And everything Ebonya Stubbs said in her review is also absolutely true. I witnessed it all with my mom. We must have been their at the same time. They had a COVID breakout and went from 2 to 20 cases within a week. For a facility that claims to do more for respitory illnesses this is absolutely unacceptable. My mom is fighting for her life from their negligence and she received a stage 3 wound from their lack of care. And even when they did a memo on protocols they were hardly enforced.
